SCSU Baseball Sweeps Saint Rose In NE10 Doubleheader

ALBANY, N.Y.—Southern Connecticut baseball swept a doubleheader at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y.. The Owls took the first game, 14-8, and the nightcap, 7-3. With the wins, the Owls improved to 15-12 and 3-5 in the NE10 while Saint Rose dropped to 10-9 and 4-2 in the NE10.

Spencer Fox (2-2) picked up the win in relief after tossing two frames and allowing two runs on three hits. Following Fox, Braeden Sparaco came in and finished the job. Sparaco threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings on one hit while striking out three.

At the plate, Chad Fedeli was 3-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored while Jack Drewry was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-4 with two runs while Zack Nakonechny was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

After three innings of quiet bats, the Owls had a three run fourth inning which started with a single to right from Isiah Walker which scored Drewry and brought the Owls to a 2-1 lead. Following Walker, Nakonechny singled to left driving in Jake Gruttadauria which brought the Owls to a 3-1 lead. Nakonechny's single gave him his first RBI of this season. Derrick Jagello singled to center to score Gruttadauria and give the Owls a 4-1 lead.

The next inning, the Owls tacked on three more runs to extend their lead to four runs, 7-3. The Owls scored on a Drewry single to right to plate Fedeli; a Talavera sacrifice fly to score Billy Sullivan; and a Nakonechny single to left to score Drewry. From there, the Owls bats would go quiet until the seventh inning, when they added two more insurance runs to the lead.

Starting off the seventh, Fedeli doubled to center, scoring Patrick Dillon and Gruttadauria which brought the Owls lead to 9-6. Sullivan then singled to right, scoring Fedeli, which brought the Owls lead to 10-6.

After a bottom of the seventh, which saw the Owls lead decrease to two and a quiet eighth from both sides, the Owls added more padding in a wild ninth inning which featured four runs crossing the plate. All four runs for the Owls came via balls in the dirt. Braedan Sparaco, Drewry and Talavera all crossed the plate on wild pitches and Sullivan on a passed ball which sealed the deal for the Owls, 14-8.

In Game 2, Mike Szturma started the game for the Owls and hurled 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. Keegan Daigle came on in relief and threw three scoreless and hitless innings while striking out two, but walking two batters. Braedan Sparaco retired the final two batters of the game to slam the door.

Jagello was 3-or-5 with three RBI while Fedeli also drove in three runs as part of a 2-for-5 day. Gruttadauria was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Mike Talavera was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Izaiah Walker scored two runs for the Owls.

The Owls bats opened the scoring in the second inning with Derrick Jagello smacking a single to right field to score Isiah Walker and bring the Owls lead to 1-0. The second inning scoring would not be the last of Jagello, as in the seventh inning he would come up big when the Owls needed him most. After two quiet innings, the Owls offense woke up again in the fourth inning as Fedeli singled to center, scoring Jake Gruttadauria to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

With one out in the seventh inning and the bases loaded Coach Shea called on Zack Nakonechny to pinch hit and he drew the walk to plate a run and tie the game at 3-3. With the bases still loaded, Jagello came up big again, smacking an RBI single to left field to score Walker and Gruttadauria and extend the Owls lead to 5-3.

Fedeli hustled out an infield single to score Nakonechny and give the Owls a 6-3 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, the Owls added a run when Fedeli's sacrifice fly scored Jagello to give Southern the 7-3 win.

Southern returns to the friendly confines of The Ballpark at SCSU for a four-game stretch when they host New Haven at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 3 before opening a three-game series against Adelphi on Friday, Apr. 5.
