SCSU Softball Drops Two At Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut softball lost both games of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Bentley, 2-1 in eight innings and 4-3. The Owls dropped to 9-11 overall with the two losses and 3-3 in the NE10 while Bentley improved to 13-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

In the first game, Emily Lange was 3-for-4 while Gabriella Festa had a two-hit day. Dominique DeLutri drove in the Owls' only run of the game, scoring Nicole Spinelli in the second game to tie it at 1-1. Jessica Perucki took her third loss of the year despite a solid showing. Perucki logged seven strong innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out four.

Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a lead-off double followed by a bunt and a sacrifice scored the early run for the Falcons. In the top of the second inning, Spinelli ripped a two-out single to left field before scoring on DeLutri's double to center to tie the game at 1-1.

Bentley kept threatening for most of the game but Perucki stranded six Falcons on the bases. In the bottom of the eighth, Bentley's Jordan Krause, who also drove in Bentley's first run, homered to lead-off the inning and give the Falcons the walk-off win.

In the second game, the Owls were held to just three hits, but managed three runs in the loss. Festa and Rachel Miller both drove in runs while Karley Austin, Nadia Cestari and Jordan Chamberlain all scored for the Owls. Lange was 1-for-3 with a double and a sacrifice to help the cause.

Lange led off the game with the double before the Owls were retired in order to end the inning. Bentley got on the board in the bottom half of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Cestari walked and then moved to second on Lange's sacrifice. After Austin lined out, Miller reached on an error that moved Cestari to third. Festa then singled to left field to score Cestari and tie the game at 1-1.

After Bentley regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth, the Owls scored twice to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Chamberlain walked to lead off the inning before moving to second on Cestari's sacrifice. Lange popped up for the second out of the inning before Austin reached on an error by the left fielder that allowed Chamberlain to scoring the tying run. Miller then followed with a single to right that score Austin and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead.

The Owls lead was short lived as Bentley struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Owls had an opportunity in the sixth when Perucki walked and Spinelli reached on an error. After DeLutri bunted both runners over, the next two Owl batters were retired.

Southern resumes NE10 play on Monday, Apr. 8 at 10 a.m. at Assumption.
