GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut softball was defeated by Adelphi University in an NE10 doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls lost the first game closely, 1-0 to Adelphi and in game two, the Panthers won 5-0 over Southern. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 11-19 and an NE10 record of 5-11, while Adelphi improved to an overall record of 22-16 and an NE10 record of 13-3.
In game one,
Karley Austin,
Dominique DeLutri and
Faith Barbieri each recorded a hit for Southern Connecticut. Pitcher
Ashley Lewis threw two strikeouts, while allowing just two hits and one run. Both teams were deadlocked for majority of the game, as the Owls had three hits in total to the Panthers' two hits in total.
However, Adelphi put the deciding run on the board in the bottom of the sixth, to take the advantage. Southern Connecticut did get in scoring position in the top of the seventh but the Panthers closed out the game with a 1-0 victory over the Owls.
In game two,
Faith Barbieri and
Gabriella Festa recorded a team-best of two hits. In the bottom of the first inning, Adelphi got on the board first. In the third inning, the Panthers added another run to their total. Southern tried to get their bats going; but, remained with a few hits scattered throughout the game. Both the Panthers and Owls had a quiet two innings in between the fourth and fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Adelphi continued to score, as they brought three more batters across home plate.
Faith Barbieri hit a single towards left field then stole second base in the top of the seventh, bringing hopes of a comeback, but again, Adelphi ended the game with their second win of the day.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, April 20 at Queens College in Flushing, N.Y, for a non-conference doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. Southern will return to Pelz Field for Senior Day on Sunday, April 21st in New Haven, Connecticut at 12:00 p.m. for an NE10 doubleheader against Pace University.
