FLUSHING, New York—Southern Connecticut Softball split a non-conference doubleheader against The Queens College Knights in Queens, New York. Southern lost game one to the Knights, 2-1 and then in game two, Southern defeated Queens, 2-0. The Owls move to an overall record of 12-20 while the Knights move to an overall record of 13-21.
In game one, Jess Perucki tossed a complete game allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four. At the plate, Karley Austin went 2-3 with a run scored.
The Owls struck first in the top half of the third inning, when Dominique DeLutri reached base on an error by the right fielder scoring Karley Austin to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. However, the Owls bats went quiet for the rest of the game, which lead to the 2-1 loss.
After the loss in game one, the Owls looked to even the score in game two. In the third inning, Dominque DeLutri singled to right field scoring Karley Austin for the first run of the game. After three quiet innings, the Owls offense woke up again in the sixth when Karley Austin singled scoring Lorelei Stancavage bringing the Owls lead to 2-0.
On the mound for the Owls, Ashley Lewis hurled a complete game shutout, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out five. Lewis' dominant performance was her first shutout in her Owls career.
The Owls will return to action on Sunday, April 21 at 12:00 p.m. for Senior Day against Pace University in an NE10 matchup at Pelz Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
