Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, CONN—Southern Connecticut Baseball split a NE10 conference doubleheader against the Bentley University Falcons Saturday, at the Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls move to an overall record of 21-17, while the Falcons move to an overall record of 20-14.
In game one, Mike Szturma (3-3) hurled eight innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and Spencer fox tossed one inning allowing one run on two hits while striking out one. At the plate, Mike Talavera went 3-4 with one RBI and Izaiah Walker went 1-4 with one RBI.
With the Owls down 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, they had a large deficit to overcome; however, the inning started off well. Talavera singled to left scoring Chad Fedeli putting the Owls on the scoreboard bringing the lead to 3-1. Following Talavera, Walker singled to score Billy Sullivan and chipped further into the lead. Despite the two runs, the Owls ninth inning heroics would stop falling to the Falcons 3-2.
In game two, the Owls looked to even the score as Steve Phillips tossed a gem for the Owls. Phillips went six innings allowing one run while striking out two. In relief, Spencer Fox shut the door tossing one scoreless inning. At the plate, Talavera went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and Iziah Walker went 0 for 1 with an RBI.
With the score tied 0-0 in the fourth inning, Talavera singled to right scoring Fedeli which put the Owls first run on the scoreboard. The Owls offense would not stop there, as Walker reached on a error at third base which scored Billy Sullivan bringing the lead to 2-0. With the help of dominant pitching from Philips and Fox, the Owls would hold on for a 2-1 win.
Southern is back in action Sunday against Assumption University for a double header starting at noon at the Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, CT.
