No. 8 Owls Advance To NE10 Semifinals With 3-2, 13-Inning Upset Of No. 4 SNHU

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – No. 8 seeded Southern Connecticut State University softball upset No. 4 seeded Southern New Hampshire University, 3-2, in a 13-inning all-time classic Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament game at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. With the win, the Owls advance to the next round to face No. 1 seeded Adelphi at 12 p.m.

Jessica Perucki got the start on the mound and gave up two runs -only one of which was earned – while scattering six hits over six innings. She gave way to Ashley Lewis who blanked SNHU while allowing just a single hit over the final seven innings of the game. At the plate, freshman catcher Karley Austin was 3-for-6 while Nadia Cestari was 2-for-6 with a RBI. Samantha LaFemina drove in Dominique Delutri with the game-winning run while Gabriella Festa and Kalliope Stefanidis both scored for the Owls.

The game was scoreless through the top of the fifth before Southern New Hampshire broke through with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Penmen's lead was short-lived as Southern struck for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Karley Austin led off with a single, but was retired on Jessica Perucki's fielder's choice. Kalliope Stefanidis, who was pinch running for Perucki, went to second on a wild pitch. After Gabriella Festa walked and Rachel Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dominique DeLutri was hit by a pitch to force Stefanidis home and tie the game at 1-1.

Southern took the lead when Nadia Cestari roped a single through the left side of the infield to plate Festa and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. SNHU tied the game again in the bottom of the seventh after the Penmen scored an unearned run to send the game to extra innings.

Ashley Lewis finished the seventh for Perucki who exited with an injury. Lewis retired 10-straight batters through the bottom of the ninth before giving up a lead-off single in the 10th, but retiring the next three batters she faced. Lewis got into some trouble in the 11th, but retired the last eight batters she faced in the game. IN the top of the 13th, DeLutri doubled to lead-off the inning and then went to third on a single by Cestari. Nicole Spinelli popped up to left, but DeLutri opted to not chance it. It was the next batter, Samantha LaFemina's fly ball to right that scored DeLutri and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead.

Lewis stepped to the rubber in the bottom of the 13th inning and got the first two batters to swing at the first pitch, both of which were hit hard but handled by Owls' third baseman Festa. The last batter of the game hit a deep fly ball to center that Emily Lange snagged for the final out of the game.
