SCSU Softball Beats Minnesota Crookston & Post

VIERA, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut softball team beat Minnesota Crookston and Post in their second day at the Spring Coast Space Games. The team beat Minnesota Crookston in their first game of the day, 3-1 and beat Post, 8-0 in five innings.  

Ashley Lewis got the win in Game 1 to improve to 4-1 scattering four hits and had four strikeouts. Rachel Miller relieved her in the 7th to get the save. Olivia Young got her first win in Game 2 while striking out six and allowing one hit in four innings. Kate Nickerson saw her first collegiate inning and recorded three strikeouts.  

Rachel Miller was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a homerun. Nicole Spinelli was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Young was 3-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.  


Game 1 vs. Minnesota Crookston 
The Owls got on the board in the 2nd inning when Miller and Young led off the inning with back-to-back base hits. Dominique DeLutri then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners for Cestari to hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Miller. 

Samantha LaFemina started the 3rd inning off with a walk and then advanced on a ground ball. Spinelli then came up with a single to right to bring in LaFemina.  

In the top 5th, Cheyenne LaTouche was put in as pinch runner for Spinelli who got on base with a single. LaTouche was able to capitalize on a wild pitch and an error to score. 

Minnesota Crookston scored their first run in the bottom of the 5th and threatened in the bottom of the 6th. The Eagles had two runners on-base with one out but were ultimately stranded as Lewis worked out of the jam before Miller came in to retire three batters in the 7th to give the Owls the win.  

Game 2 vs. Post 
The Owls got it going early when Olivia Young doubled and then advanced to third on an error and was brought in by Nicole Spinelli for the first run of the game. Rachel Miller followed that up with a home run to left field to bring the lead to two.  

In the bottom of the 2nd, Cheyenne LaTouche ripped her first career hit to then score on a triple from Izzy Ingersoll. Young then singled to bring in Ingersoll. Following that were back-to-back doubles from Spinelli and Miller with Miller bringing in both Young and Spinelli.  

In the 4th, Spinelli, DeAnna DeCaro, and Kayla Wakely loaded the bases for Sophia Angiolini to bring in a run.  

Kalliope Stefanidis led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and was the eighth run of the game to end it in 5 innings after Ingersoll crushed a single up the middle. 


The Owls will face UT Dallas in a doubleheader in their third day at the Spring Coast Space Games.
