SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader with UT Dallas

VIERA, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut softball team split in a doubleheader with UT Dallas. The Owls won Game 1 against UT Dallas, 14-1, in eight innings and lost the second, 9-3.

Rachel Miller was the winning pitcher in Game 1 for her first win of the season. She also went 3-for-9 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Izzy Ingersoll was 5-for-8 with four runs scored, two RBIs, and two doubles. Nicole Spinelli was 5-for-9 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double. Karley Austin was 3-for-8 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a double. 


Game 1 
Dominique DeLutri was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Olivia Young was also 2-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, and two doubles. Seven different Owls had multi-hit games during Game 1. 

The Owls got it going quick in Game 1. Izzy Ingersoll, Karley Austin, and Nicole Spinelli started off the 1st with three consecutive singles. Rachel Miller then came up and hit another single to score Ingersoll. Olivia Young then doubled to score Austin, Spinelli, and Miller, and then scored on an error during the same play.

UT Dallas put up one run on the board in the bottom of the 1st.  

Southern Connecticut kept it going in the top of the 2nd with back-to-back doubles from Ingersoll and Austin. Austin's hit scored Ingersoll from second.

The Comets really got it going in the bottom of the 2nd putting four runs up to bring the game within one.  

Dominique DeLutri tripled in the 5th and scored on a passed ball to tack on another run for the Owls.  

In the top of the 7th, Spinelli singled and then advanced to second on an error. Cheyenne LaTouche was put in as a pinch runner and then scored on a double from Young.

UT Dallas then tied up the game in the 7th and forced extra innings. 

Nadia Cestari was put on second in the top of the 8th and scored on a double from Ingersoll. She then advanced to third when Austin reached first on an error. Miller came up with a single up the middle to score both Ingersoll and Austin. The Owls kept it rolling when Young and DeLutri loaded the bases for Sophia Angiolini who hit a single that allowed the three base runners to score.  

The Comets put up three runs in the bottom of the 8th, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Owls. 


Game 2 
UT Dallas scored in the 1st, but Southern Connecticut matched their one run in the bottom half of the inning. Izzy Ingersoll walked and was brought in by Rachel Miller. 

It was a similar story in the 2nd inning with both teams scoring one run tie it at two. Cassidy Sullivan walked and was eventually brought in by a single from Ingersoll.  

The Comets then went up by five after scoring five in the top of the 4th. The Owls responded with one run in the bottom of the inning when Karley Austin scored off of a double from Nicole Spinelli.  

UT Dallas later added two more to take home win.  


The Owls will close out their trip to Florida on Wednesday, Mar. 19 with games against Post and Florida Tech.
