BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Southern Connecticut softball team swept Bloomfield in a non-conference doubleheader to start the season, 9-0 and 6-0. The Owls are now 2-0 while the Bloomfield Bears go to 0-8.
Ashley Lewis had a career-high ten strikeouts and carried a perfect game through 6 and 2/3 innings, retiring the first 20 batters she faced before walking a batter in the bottom of the seventh. This is the first no-hitter since Jayme Larson threw one on Apr. 17, 2011, against Bentley. In addition to Lewis' historic afternoon, Giselle DeLutri pitched a seven-inning shutout, scattering three hits and striking out 15 in her collegiate debut. The Owls two pitchers allowed just five runners on base.
Nicole Spinelli was 4-for-7 on the day with five RBIs and two doubles. In her collegiate debut, Izzy Ingersoll was 3-for-8 with a double, triple, two runs scored, and also drove in a run. Sophia Angiolini got her first start behind the plate in game two and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, and threw out two runners.
In Game 1, along with Spinelli's three hits, Ingersoll, Karley Austin, Olivia Young, Dominique DeLutri, and Samantha LaFemina all had two hits each. Young also drove in two runs in her first game as an Owl. Austin, Ingersoll, Nadia Cestari, and Marissa Correra all drove in a run.
In Game 2, Rachel Miller was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. In her first game, Kayla Wakely walked and scored twice. Cassidy Sullivan also picked up her first career hit along with Angiolini and Ingersoll.
The Owls head to Post on Thursday, Mar. 6 for a non-conference doubleheader.
