Ashley Lewis Tosses Second-Straight No-Hitter in Owls Doubleheader Sweep at Post

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut softball team swept non-conference opponent Post, 12-0 and 23-7. The Owls improve to 4-0 while Post starts their season at 0-2.

The Owls were led by Ashley Lewis who threw her second consecutive no-hitter along with seven strikeouts and only one batter walking to reach base. This is the first back-to-back no-hitter by a pitcher in program history.

The Southern Connecticut offense exploded scoring 12 runs in the first game and 23 in the second. The program record for most runs scored in a game is 25 against Boston State in 1979. Today's 23 runs is the second-most in program history. This is also the 5th time the program has scored 20 or more runs in a game in program history, since 1973. The program record for most runs in a doubleheader is 38 vs. Boston State in 1979 making 35 the second-most in program history. This is also the third time the Owls have scored 30 runs in a doubleheader including 31 vs Dowling in 1986 and 38 vs. Boston State in 1979.

Izzy Ingersoll was 5-for-7 with five runs scored, four doubles, and four RBIs. Olivia Young was 6-for-8 with five RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles, and a homerun. Sophia Angiolini was 4-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nicole Spinelli was 4-for-7 over the doubleheader and in Game 2, she reached base in all four plate appearances and was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, three RBIs, a double, and a stolen base.



Game 1
In Game 1, Karley Austin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and threw out a runner.

The Owls had their first base runner in the top of the 2nd when Dominique DeLutri reached on a throwing error and was able to advance to second. Sophia Angiolini then hit a ground ball up the middle to score DeLutri.

The top of the 5th was when the bats started going and the team put up six runs. After the first batter of the inning reached base on a walk and then was thrown out stealing, Samantha LaFemina got the Owls a base runner with a bunt single. From there, the offense exploded. Karley Austin hit a triple to right center to score LaFemina. Izzy Ingersoll then came up with a double down the right field line to score Austin. The Eagles then retired the next batter for Rachel Miller to then single to right field and bring Ingersoll home. Miller advanced to third on the throw and Olivia Young hit a single through the left side to score Miller. Dominique DeLutri then homered to bring in two more runs. 

In the top of the 6th, Austin singled to to right and then advanced to second after Ingersoll walked. Nicole Spinelli then singled advancing both runners to the next bag. Young then hit a single to left field to advance the runners, scoring Austin. DeLutri reached base on an error which allowed Young to advance to third while Ingersoll and Spinelli scored. Iris Rooney was put in as a pinch hitter and walked to reach base for the first time in her career. Kayla Wakley then singled to center field - her first career hit - to score DeLutri and Young.

Game 2
In Game 2, Nadia Cestari was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Rachel Miller and Cassidy Sullivan were both 2-for-4. Sullivan had three RBIs, two runs scored, and a double while Miller had two runs scored and a stolen base. Giselle DeLutri got the win in the circle allowing only three runs. 

Southern Connecticut came out hot in game two scoring four runs in the 1st inning. Izzy Ingersoll led off with a double to left center. After the next batter was retired, Nicole Spinelli doubled to left center scoring Ingersoll. Rachel Miller then singled to left, moving Spinelli to third who then scored on a passed ball. Dominique DeLutri walked to put two runners on and Miller came home on another passed ball. After the next batter was retired, Nadia Cestari singled to right field to score DeLutri and Miller. 

Marissa Correra walked to start off the top of the 2nd and then advance to second on a single up the middle from Ingersoll. Olivia Young put down a sacrifice bunt to move Correra and Ingersoll for Spinelli to come up and knock them both in with a single up the middle. Miller and DeLutri then walked to load the bases for Sophia Angiolini to single to first to score a run. Post retired the next batter to then face Cassidy Sullivan who hit a double to left center advancing Angiolini to third while scoring DeLutri and Miller. Angiolini later scored on a wild pitch to cap the Owls six-run inning. 

Young started off the top of the 3rd with a solo home run. The scoring didn't stop there - Spinelli was hit by a pitch, Miller grounded out to advance her, and then she stole third to finally be brought in by DeLutri. 

The Owls then added 11 more runs in the top of the 4th. Cestari singled to third base to start off the inning. Sullivan and Correra then singled to load the bases for Ingersoll who scored Cestari on a sacrifice fly. Young singled up the middle to score Sullivan and Correra was able to score on a throwing error which also advanced Young to second. Spinelli singled and Young was able to score on another Post error. Miller then singled and Spinelli advance to second base for both runners to advance again on a wild pitch. Kalliope Stefanidis singled to right field - her first career hit - to score Spinelli and advance Miller. Angiolni then came up with a single to center to advance Stefanidis and score Miller. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. Cestari singled to right field to advance Angiolini and score Stefanidis. Sullivan then reached on an error and scored Angiolini to bring in another run. Ingersoll and Young then hit back-to-back doubles to score the final three runs for the Owls

The Owls will host Bridgeport on Thursday, Mar. 13 for their home opener.
