WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut softball team split with crosstown rival New Haven. The Owls took the first game winning 5-1 and dropped the second game 1-0 in eight innings. The Owls are now 13-11 overall, and 2-4 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers are 9-21 and 2-6 in the conference.
Ashley Lewis got the win in Game 1, allowing six hits, one run, and struck out five to improve to 6-5. Giselle DeLutri took the loss in Game 2 despite allowing only three hits, a walk, and one run while striking out seven.
Dominique DeLutri was 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored while Olivia Young was 3-for-8 with a solo home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Karley Austin and Sophia Angiolini also had hits in both games.
In Game 1, the Owls packed on four runs in the 1st inning. Karley Austin led off with a single and stole second before getting brought in by Izzy Ingersoll. With two outs, Dominique DeLutri singled to bring in Rachel Miller before Cassidy Sullivan doubled to center to score DeLutri and Olivia Young.
The Chargers put one on the board in the bottom of the 1st, before Young hit a solo home run in the 3rd. New Haven threatened, getting multiple runners in scoring position through the rest of the game but could not get past Lewis.
Game 2 came down to the 8th inning when New Haven walked it off with a squeeze. The Owls had runners in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings but could not push one across.
The Owls will travel to Manchester, NH this weekend to play Southern New Hampshire and Saint Anselm.
