SCSU Volleyball To Host Hispanic Heritage Night On Tuesday, Oct. 20 At Pelz Gymnasium

NEW HAVEN, Conn.— Southern Connecticut State University volleyball will celebrate culture and community when it hosts Hispanic Heritage Night on Tuesday, Oct. 20, against American International College at Pelz Gymnasium.

First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Pelz Gym. The Northeast 10 Conference match is being held in partnership with SCSU Athletics & Recreation and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
In partnership with Southern Athletics, DEI celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the cultures, histories, contributions and pride of Hispanic and Latino/a/e/x communities, according to event organizers.

The night will highlight Southern's Hispanic and Latino/a/e/x student-athletes, staff and fans as part of the university's ongoing Hispanic Heritage Month programming. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and Southern is extending its campus celebrations through October with educational and community events.

Southern Connecticut State has planned several elements to mark the occasion at Pelz.

On game night, the gymnasium will be decorated with flags representing different Hispanic, Latinx and Latino/a/e communities. The display is intended to reflect the diversity within the Hispanic diaspora and recognize students and families from across Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain.

The celebration will also include a short performance by OLAS, the Organization of Latin American Students at Southern Connecticut State. OLAS is one of the university's longstanding cultural student organizations and regularly hosts educational and social programming focused on Latin American culture.

In addition, T-shirts featuring the phrase "Somos Owls" — Spanish for "We're Owls" — will be given to the first 100 fans in attendance. The shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the entrance to Pelz Gym.

Southern Connecticut State enters the week in the midst of its Northeast 10 schedule. The Owls are hosting American International in a key conference matchup, with postseason positioning on the line in late October.

Admission is free for Hispanic Heritage Night, which is open to all students, faculty, staff and community members. Organizers said the goal is to use athletics as a platform to foster inclusion and celebrate the cultural identities represented across the Southern community.
