SCSU Baseball Drops Season Opener to Barry, 10-7

Box Score MIAMI, Fla. - Southern Connecticut baseball dropped their season opener, losing 10-7 to Barry in Miami.

Matt Scalia went 3-4 with two doubles in his collegiate debut, also scoring four of the Owls' seven runs. Jake Chacho drove in two runs and scored twice, recording his first home run of the season. Devin Pelletier also recorded two hits.

Colin Blake was solid in his first start of the year, throwing four scoreless innings and recording two strikeouts.

The Owls kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Jake Chacho drove a single through the left side of the infield. He instantly stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Auggie Albert walked, then stole second with runners on the corners. Another wild throw allowed Chacho to score.

Southern continued their momentum into the third when Matt Scalia doubled to right center to start the inning, advancing to third on a fielding error. Nick Karras drove him in with an RBI groundout, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Scalia singled in the fifth, then advanced to third on a fielding error, allowing Devin Pelletier to drive him in with a single through the right side.

Cody Heselton entered in relief of Blake with one out in the bottom of the fifth, working his way out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Owls doubled their score in the sixth inning. Bam Talavera singled to right, and Chacho drove a monster home run off the scoreboard in left field, extending Southern's lead 5-0. The Owls added their sixth later in the inning after Alex Cappellucci scored on a throwing error.

Heselton ran into some trouble in the bottom of the inning, allowing three runs (one earned) after a double, fielding error, and sacrifice fly. Braeden Sparaco entered in relief and escaped the jam, but got knocked around seventh, allowing four runs after a single and a triple with the bases loaded. Harry Roy entered with the bases loaded and recorded the final out of the inning.

Southern bounced right back, with Scalia doubling again. A Karras hit-by-pitch and a walk from Devin Pelletier loaded the bases. Spencer Chard drove in a run on an infield single to tie the game at seven.

The Buccaneers, however, continued their momentum into the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs (one earned) against Roy. The Owls went down in order in the top of the ninth, giving Barry the 10-7 win.
