SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Barry

MIAMI, Fla. - Southern Connecticut baseball split their doubleheader against Barry Univeristy, dropping the firs game 7-6 before winning the second 13-12. The Owls move to 1-2 on the season, taking one game in their opening series.

Brennan Staubley homered twice across the two games, going a combined 4-8 with three runs scored and four driven in. He caught all three games in the series. Devin Pelletier also homered, and Spencer Chard tied Staubley with four hits to lead the team. Jake Chacho and Alex Cappellucci each recorded multi-hit games.

GAME 1

Southern jumped to an early lead when Devin Pelletier blasted his first home run of the season to deep center field with out in the 1st inning. In the 3rd, the Owls took a 4-0 after a RBI single by Ryan Fedeli scored Alex Cappellucci, who led off the inning with a single. Pelletier was then hit by a pitch before Spencer Chard drove in Fedeli and Pelletier to give the Owls the lead.

Bailey Goss was cruising on the mound after retiring the Barry lineup in order through he first three innings. In the 4th, Barry broke through with a three-run inning to cut the Owls' lead to 4-3. The Owls got a run back in the 5th when Brennan Staubley turned on a two-out offering and blasted it over the left-center field wall to push Southern's lead to 5-3.

Barry scored three more times in the 5th to take a 6-5 lead. In the 7th, Fedeli ground out to start the inning before Pelletier worked a walk and then went to second on a wild pitch. After the next batter was retired, Staubley stroked a two-out single up the middle to score Pelletier and tie the game. Barry scored in the bottom of the 9th before retiring the Owls in order in the top of the 9th to hold on for the win.

GAME 2

It was the Owls who struck first again in the second game, with Staubley rocking a two-run homer to left in the top of the first. Singles from Chacho and Cappellucci each drove in runs, giving the Owls a four-run first inning. Barry struck right back, however, bringing in four of their own against Southern starter Jace Alvino in the first two innings. Alvino would give the Owls length, striking out three over 4.2 innings of work while allowing six runs (three earned).

Southern's offense would strike again in the top of the third. Another Single from Cappellucci would drive in two runs, and a single from Matt Scalia would bring him in, putting the Owls ahead 7-4. Chard would continue the momentum into the sixth, driving in Southern's eighth run on a single to left center. Chard and Staubley would both score later in the inning, and Pelletier would bring home Cappellucci in the seventh to extend the lead to six.

Peter Glidden entered in relief of Alvino, throwing one clean inning before running into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Barry scored two runs off a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, then added three more unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Johnny O'Brien would escape the inning.

Southern took advantage of poor defense in the top of the ninth, with a throwing error allowing the go-ahead run to score off a grounder from Staubley. O'Brien would allow one unearned run to score in the bottom of the ninth, but would ultimately close the game, earning his first career win.

The Owls will head south again next weekend, taking on Staten Island, Post, and Willmington in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
