SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, CONN-- Southern Connecticut State University Softball split a pair of Northeast 10 Conference match-ups against Saint Anselm on Friday March 27 at the Pelz Field. The Owls move to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the Hawks move to 11-11 overall and 3-3 in the NE10. 

Across both games, Izzy Ingersoll had five hits with six RBI, Olivia Young had five hits and Karley Austin had four hits and an RBI. 



Game 1: SCSU 12, STA 2

The Owls bats came out hot in game one and the team never looked back. Southern Connecticut scored 12 runs on 11 hits offensively,. Izzy Ingersoll led the way 2-4 with 5 RBI, while Austin and Young both had multiple hits. Ashley Lewis got the start on the mound for the Owls and she went the distance tossing five innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven. 

The Owls offense got started early when Austin singled to the left side scoring Gianna Iaquinto giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. The following batter Angiolini singled in her first game back from injury scoring Brianna Pearson bringing the Owls to 2-0. The first inning scoring did not stop there as Cheyenne LaTouche would ground out which allowed Austin to score giving the Owls a 3-0 lead coming out of the first inning. 

In the next inning the Owls would add another, when Gianna Iaquinto stepped to the plate with Olivia Young on base. With one runnner on, Iaquinto drove a ball over the left field fence for a home run and driving in Young extending the Owls lead to 5-0. 

In the third inning, the Owls scored again. This time it was on a singled by Ingersoll which scored Young and Jordan Chamberlin extending the Owls lead up to 7-0. 

After two runs by the Hawks in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 7-2, the inning began for the Owls with a double by Austin. Austin would later score on an error by the third baseman extending the lead to 8-2. Following Austin's run, Chamberlin doubled to center field scoring LaTouche bringing the Owls lead to 9-2.

After a single by Young and a walk by Nadia Cestari, the innings scoring would continue as with the bases loaded, Ingersoll doubled clearing the bases giving the Owls a 12-2 lead. The runs on Ingersoll's double would be the last for game one as the Owls took a 12-2 win. 

Game 2: STA 6, SCSU 3: 

In game two Izzy Ingersoll led the way on offense once again going 3-4 with an RBI and Olivia Young went 3-3. Giselle DeLutri got the start for the Owls tossing four innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four. Nickerson came on in relief tossing two no hit frames with one strikeout. 

After a quiet first inning, the Owls scored their first run in the second inning when Ingersoll singled scoring young to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. 

As the Owls offense went quiet, the Hawks would score six runs in the next four innings to give the Hawks a 6-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Owls began to comeback when Chamberlin singled to the left side scoring LaTouche cutting the lead to 6-2. 

After a scoreless half inning from the Hawks, the Owls comeback continued as Angiolini singled scoring Pearson cutting the lead to 6-3. However, that would be the last of the runs for the game as the Owls would drop game two 6-3. 

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Sunday March 29 when they travel to Rindge, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a NE10 doubleheader starting at 10am, with the second game beginning at noon. The Owls return home for another pair of conference match-ups against American International College with games beginning at 2:30pm and 4:30pm.
