NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University volleyball hit its stride at Pelz Gymnasium against Post, sweeping the Eagles, 3-0, to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 at home. The Owls won 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 as Post dropped to 1-9.

Kerrigan Habing led the Owls with a match-high 14 kills on .303 hitting to go with 14 digs, one ace and one reception error for 15.0 points. Sydney Bennett added eight kills, one dig and a dominant night at the net with three solo blocks and three block assists for 12.5 points.

Marisabell Sias chipped in eight kills on .273 hitting with one assist, one dig and one block assist for 8.5 points. The offense ran through sophomore setter Kimberli Mitchell, who handed out 33 assists with eight digs and two block assists. Sarah Henault and Alyssa Ferreira both had a pair of aces and combined for 16 digs.

SCSU finished the match hitting .177 with 42 kills, six aces and five solo blocks and eight block assists. Post was held to .052 hitting with 24 kills and two aces. Both teams finished with 52 digs.

Southern Connecticut opened strong in the first set with 14 kills on 40 swings but needed to rally late. Post used 10 kills on 36 attempts for a .139 percentage in the frame and led for much of the middle portion. There were three ties and no lead changes early, and the Eagles pushed the Owls to the brink at 23-23. SCSU closed on a 2-0 run to take the opener, 25-23.

The Owls took control in the second set. SCSU put down 13 kills on 42 swings for a .119 percentage, while limiting Post to five kills and seven errors for a -.056 clip. Four ties and three lead changes defined the early going, but Southern Connecticut created separation midway through and never looked back in a 25-19 win.

The third set was the most competitive. Post hit .070 with nine kills against six errors on 43 attempts, while SCSU hit a match-best .208 with 15 kills and five errors on 48 swings. The frame featured nine ties and four lead changes. SCSU led by as many as five, saw Post claw back to within one at 21-20, then used kills from Habing and Bennett and a solo block from Bennett to close out the sweep, 25-21.

Defensively, Southern Connecticut was balanced. Habing's 14 digs led the team, with Ferreira adding nine, Mitchell eight, Johnson seven and Sias and Katie Bardak with three apiece. At the net, Bennett's six total blocks paced the Owls, with Mianna Brown adding two block assists and Bardak, Maria Martinez and Ferreira each adding one.

Southern is back in action at Pelz Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 15 against Mercy and Friday, Sept. 18 against Molloy.
