Kate Gedney scored the game-winning goal in the triumph over Assumption.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior co-captain Kate Gedney (Westbrook, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke with 22:41 remaining in regulation as the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team pulled out a 2-1 win over Assumption on Tuesday night in New Haven, Conn.

SCSU moved closer to a Northeast-10 Tournament berth with the win and is now 8-11, 7-8 in NE-10 play. Assumption dropped to 6-11, 4-10.

The Greyhounds struck first on a goal from Hillary Zysk just 8:30 into the game.

The Owls answered on a marker from Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) just over 14 minutes later. Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.) sent a pass into the circle near the side of the cage. Martin took the ball and fired a shot through the legs of the Assumption goalie for her 13th goal of the season.

The game stayed tied into the second half. However, SCSU was awarded a penalty stroke after illegal contact by Assumption during an Owls' offensive penalty corner.

Gedney took the opportunity and rattled home her seventh goal of the season and second of the year courtesy of a penalty stroke.

Freshman goalie Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) turned away four shots in a winning effort for the Owls.

The Owls are back in action on Thursday night for the regular season finale against Stonehill. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
