Martin Powers Field Hockey Team Past AIC, 3-0

Junior finds the back of the net twice in the victory

Whitney Martin scored two goals in the win over AIC.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) registered her third multiple-goal game of the year, tallying a pair of markers to lead the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over American International College on Thursday night in New Haven, Conn.

SCSU moved to 5-10, 4-7 in NE-10 play with the win. AIC is now 2-10, 2-9.

The Owls opened the scoring just 9:16 into the contest. Angela Cafarelli (Enfield, Conn.) took the shot from the center of the circle that was partially stopped by AIC goalie Cindy Armand. The ball trickled through the legs of Armand and right to Martin, who tucked home the loose ball for her ninth goal of the year.

SCSU went up 2-0 with just under 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Kate Gedney (Westbrook, Conn.) fed a pass into the circle, where Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) fired home a low, bouncing shot that eluded Armand.

The Owls then closed out the scoring on Martin's second goal of the night. On a play that originated off a penalty corner, Cafarelli handled the ball in the center of the circle and fed a pass down low to Martin on the goal line. Martin then tapped the ball in her to secure her 10th goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) turned away five shots to record her second collegiate shutout.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. home game against St. Michael's.
