NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite outshooting American International College by a 20-12 margin, the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Yellow Jackets in its Northeast-10 opener on Thursday night.
The Owls are now 1-1, 0-1 in NE-10 play. AIC moved to 1-0, 1-0.
AIC opened the scoring with 7:43 remaining in the first half on a goal from Nicole Phelps, and the game stayed that way into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead just 4:20 into the second half on a marker from Jamie Anderson.
From there, SCSU dominated the play. The Owls held a 15-3 advantage in the shot department in the second half. Their best chance came roughly midway through the stanza when a shot from
Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) caromed off the post.
Kiernan Kelley (Guilford, Conn.) played the first 45:31 of the contest and made five stops for SCSU.
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) played the final 24:29 and turned away one shot.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Kutztown University in a non-league contest.
