Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) finished with five points (two goals, one assist) and freshman goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) earned her first collegiate shutout as the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team blanked Merrimack on Wednesday night, 3-0. The victory was the second in a row for the Owls.
SCSU improved to 4-8, 3-6 in NE-10 play with the win. Merrimack is now 3-8, 3-5 in conference action.
The hosts dominated the Warriors from the opening faceoff. SCSU took the first 15 shots of the game and the 15th – a bid from Monfredo – found the back of the net with just 28 seconds remaining in the opening half. Monfredo capitalized off a scramble in front for her first goal of the year.
The Owls extended their lead to two goals just 2:19 into the second half. Monfredo slid a pass along the goal line right to
Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.), who connected for her seventh marker of the year.
Monfredo closed the scoring just over 10 minutes into the second half.
Angela Cafarelli (Enfield, Conn.) took a shot that was stopped, but Monfredo was right there to deposit the rebound.
Zarrella finished with two saves in earning her first collegiate shutout.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. road game at St. Anselm.
