Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Captains
Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.) and Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) each tallied five points to lead a balanced offensive attack as the No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team ran its winning streak to four in a row with a 6-1 win over Assumption College.
SCSU moved to 10-6, 10-4 in Northeast-10 play with the win. The Greyhounds are 2-14, 1-13.
The Owls held a distinct edge in the early going, as they took the first 12 shots on goal in the contest. However, Assumption weathered the storm and struck first on a goal from Sandy Garney just over 17 minutes into the game.
SCSU evened the score with 3:20 left in the first half. After some nifty stick work from Berry to get the ball into the circle,
Inga Stonga (East London, South Africa) tipped a feed to
Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.). Martin's bid went through the legs of the Assumption goalie.
The Owls jumped in front with a goal from
KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) 7:20 into the second half. Berry fired a pass into the circle off a restart, and McCafferty was there to redirect it home.
The hosts tacked on an insurance goal with 15:10 remaining. Berry finished a penalty corner opportunity by chipping home a pass from the near side of the cage.
Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) and Martha assisted on the score.
Martin added her second of the game later in the half, this time off an assist from Berry.
Martha added back-to-back goals later in the half. The first came off of a penalty corner, while the latter was off a pass from Berry.
Goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with nine saves for the Owls.
The Owls return to action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they travel to No. 6 nationally ranked Bentley.
