Late Rally Sends No. 8 Field Hockey Team Over AIC, 5-4

The Owls sent their seniors off with a 5-4 win over AIC on Wednesday night.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) and sophomore Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) scored 4:13 apart late in the second half to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 victory for the No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team in its Northeast-10 game with American International.

The Owls are now 11-8, 11-6 in Northeast-10 play. AIC dropped to 5-14, 4-13 in conference play.

AIC struck first on a goal just under 10 minutes into the contest. However, the Owls answered with two goals in exactly three minutes to take a 2-1 advantage.

The first marker came from Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn.) off assists from Martin and Brittany Barra (Goshen, Conn.). Then, Martin netted her first goal of the game to put the Owls ahead off an assist from Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.).

AIC scored the next two goals to restore its one-goal lead, but the hosts were able to even the score before halftime on an unassisted tally from Winterbottom with 3:03 left in the opening frame.

The Yellow Jackets scored 2:57 into the second half to regain the lead, but the Owls used their two late goals to secure the win.

Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with nine saves in goal for the Owls.

The Owls return to action on Oct. 25 for the regular season finale at Merrimack.
