MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Sophomore Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) allowed three runs in a complete game effort, but the Southern Connecticut State University softball team could muster only one hit as the squad fell to No. 6 nationally-ranked Barry University by a score of 3-0 at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon. Despite the game being played on the campus of Barry University, Southern Connecticut was the home team in the game, which was a part of the Barry Softball Invitational. With the loss, the Owls fell to 3-3 overall. Barry improved to 23-2.

Barry broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning, as catcher Brittany Anderson, who singled to leadoff the inning, crossed home plate on a balk by Iacomini.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when RBI doubles from pitcher Megan Young and third baseman Holli Davis ran the score to 3-0 in favor of the Buccaneers.

The Owls finally got to Young with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior shortstop Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) knocked a base hit through the right side of the infield to break up a no-hitter. Lee would not advance past first base as Young rebounded by registering her tenth strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Junior left fielder Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning for the Owls, but she was erased attempting to steal second base. Young then induced a groundout by Iacomini to give Barry a 3-0 victory.

On the day, Southern Connecticut had a total of four base runners, only one of whom safely reached second base.

Young (7-2) allowed only one hit and three walks, while striking out 11 batters in the complete game shutout victory. Iacomini (2-1) allowed 11 hits and three earned runs in the loss. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The Southern Connecticut softball team is back in action later today as they challenge Nova Southeastern at 6 p.m.
