SANFORD, Fla. – Junior captain
Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.) scooped up a dozen groundballs to become the program's all-time leader in that category, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Franklin Pierce on Tuesday afternoon, 15-10. The game was tied at 8-8 midway through the second half before the Ravens scored six goals in a span of 5:51 to pull away for the win.
Martha now has 79 career groundballs, as she moved past former Owl and current assistant coach
Cathy Cardini during the contest.
The Owls are now 0-4 on the season, while Franklin Pierce improved to 1-1.
The game was tied at 6-6 at halftime before Southern Connecticut scored the first two goals of the second stanza.
Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) scored just 1:41 into the frame before
Jessica Kraszewski (West Haven, Conn.) found the back of the net off a feed from Martha just over three minutes later.
However, Franklin Pierce began a stretch of eight unanswered goals that finally concluded when Kraszewski scored again with 3:42 remaining. The Owls couldn't climb any closer than five goals the rest of the day.
It was a close affair throughout the first half. Franklin Pierce sandwiched two goals around a
Rachel Carlucci (Franklin, Mass.) marker in the early going. However, the Owls answered with three straight goals – from Monfredo,
Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) and
Allison Kownacki (Orange, Conn.) – to go in front, 4-2.
Martha and Monfredo would also score before the intermission, but Franklin Pierce rallied to even the game at 6-6.
Sophomore goalie
Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) finished with 14 saves for the Owls.
SCSU returns to action tomorrow for an exhibition game against the University of Central Florida in Winter Park, Fla.
