Late Surge Sends Women’s Lacrosse Team Past Assumption, 16-15

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Jessica Kraszewski (West Haven, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 5:15 remaining to send the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 16-15 victory over Assumption on Wednesday night.

The Owls trailed by a goal late in regulation before KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) scored off a feed from Allison Kownacki (Orange, Conn.) with 8:02 remaining.

The Owls improved to 3-11, 3-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption dropped to 1-14, 1-8.

SCSU jumped out quickly and tallied the first three goals of the game, courtesy of Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.), Kownacki and Marissa Ryan (Waterbury, Conn.).

Assumption followed with three straight to even the score before the Owls countered with markers from Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.), Kownacki and Martha for a 6-3 lead.

The Greyhounds scored the final six goals of the opening half and carried a 9-6 lead into the break.

The Owls stormed back to take the lead with four goals in a span of 2:45 early in the second half. Kownacki scored three times, while Martha added another.

Assumption countered with five goals in a stretch of 8:58 to take a 14-10 advantage over the Owls.

Southern Connecticut, though, had enough for one more run. Trailing 14-10 with 15:23 remaining, the Owls scored six of the final seven goals of the game to capture the win.

Kownacki scored twice in nine seconds only moments after Assumption had taken a 14-10 lead. Martha and Amanda Dilger (Ocean Township, N.J.) soon followed with goals, with that latter evening the game at 14-14 with 9:11 to play.

Assumption regained the lead one final time on a goal with 8:37 left, but McCafferty and Kraszewski's late goals sent the Owls to victory.

Goalie Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) finished with 14 saves in the contest for the Owls.

SCSU returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its regular season finale against St. Michael's.
