NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of goals just 2:20 apart late in the first half proved to be enough for the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team in its 2-1 win over Franklin Pierce on Tuesday evening at Jess Dow Field.
With the win, the Owls move to 1-2 and 1-0 in Northeast-10 action. Franklin Pierce is 0-2, 0-1.
Both teams attempted to seize control early on, but it was the Owls who finally struck first late in the first half off a penalty corner. Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) took a crossing pass from
Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) and tapped home a shot from the left side of the cage at 26:46.
Then, just over two minutes later,
Brittany Barra (Goshen, Conn.) fired a shot that was redirected through the goalkeeper's legs by
Kim Merritt (Norwalk, Conn.).
Franklin Pierce would get within a goal on a tally from Danielle Dolan with 15:13 remaining.
However, thanks to a strong defensive effort and the play of goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.), SCSU was able to secure the win. Zarrella finished with six saves in the outing.
The Owls return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a road game at Saint Anselm.
