NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Southern defeated Merrimack College 5-1 in a conference match at Jess Dow Field. The Owls improved to 6-5, 6-3 in conference play, while the Warriors fell to 3-7, 3-5.
Whitney Martin (Burlington, Conn.) tallied two goals and an assist in the victory.
The Owls struck first in the 25th minute of action, when sophomore
Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) scored off a pass from Martin, to give the Owls a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the 42nd minute of play, Martin found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine), giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.
However, the Warriors added one of their own when Jessica DeLacey scored off a feed from Stephanie Glazier to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
SCSU responded 10 minutes later with three more goals in a span of two minutes. Martin scored her second goal of the game off a pass from
Erin Paduda (Madison, Conn.), extending the lead to 3-1. Shortly after, Winterbottom added her second goal of the game and
Brittany Barra (Goshen, Conn.) provided one more insurance goal, completing a final score of 5-1.
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made two saves in her sixth win of the season, while Emily Achilles tallied five saves in the losing effort for the Warriors.
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 30, when they travel to Rindge, N.H. to face Frankin Pierce for a conference match. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
