GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Three different players scored a goal, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team was edged by Adelphi on Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference contest, 4-3.
The Owls are now 5-11, 4-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Adelphi moved to 9-5, 4-1 in league play.
Adelphi registered two goals in just under six minutes midway through the first half to take an early 2-0 advantage. The Owls answered with a marker from
Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.) to climb within a goal at halftime.
The hosts scored twice in the early half to extend their lead to 4-1. Southern Connecticut responded with two goals to climb within 4-3.
Lyndel Vagnini (Unionville, Conn.) found the back of the net off a pass from
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) with just under 20 minutes to go. Then, just 70 seconds later, Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) found
Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.) to make it 4-3.
However, SCSU was unable to net the equalizer and the Panthers were able to hang on for the win.
The Owls return to action on Thursday for a home game against Franklin Pierce.
