NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman
Lyndel Vagnini (Unionville, Conn.) tallied the game-winning goal with 10:12 remaining in regulation to lift the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Franklin Pierce on Thursday evening.
The Owls remain in the hunt for a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament berth with the win and are now 6-11, 5-4 in league play. Franklin Pierce moved to 7-8, 3-4 in the NE-10.
The game was played in sub-freezing temperatures with a steady light snowfall throughout the evening.
However, both teams had chances to find the back of the net throughout the first 50 minutes of action.
Finally, it was the Owls who broke through when Vagnini netted her third goal of the year off an assist from
Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.).
From there, goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) and the Owls defense made the lead stand up. Zarrella finished with eight saves in the outing.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Oct. 21 for its final non-league game of the year, a home contest against C.W. Post.
