Field Hockey Closes Regular Season With Two Games This Week

The Owls can clinch a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament berth with a win over No. 4 Stonehill on Saturday.

WIN AND YOU'RE IN
With two games remaining in the regular season, the task at hand is pretty straightforward for the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team.The Owls host C.W. Post on Wednesday night in their final non-league game of the year, but a win over No. 4 nationally ranked Stonehill on Saturday will assure the club of a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Game time for Wednesday's game is 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest is a 1 p.m. start.

NOT PLAYING LIKE A FRESHMAN
Lyndel Vagnini tallied goals in both games for the Owls last week, including the game-winning marker against Franklin Pierce on Thursday. She has goals in three of the last four games dating back to Oct. 7.

GOOD WAY TO END THINGS
The Owls end the season with three home games. The homestand began with a 1-0 win over Franklin Pierce on Oct. 15.

ABOUT THE NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
The Northeast-10 Conference Tournament begins on Oct. 29. The top six finishers in the regular season make the tournament. High seeds host throughout the event. Last year, the Owls reached the semifinals.

MCCAFFERTY SETTING NEW MARKS
Senior KellyAnne McCafferty has now set new single-season career-highs in goals (nine) and points (21) heading into this week's games. She is coming off a week in which she tallied nine points (four goals, one assist) and was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll.

'PLAY 4 THE CURE' ONCE AGAIN A SUCCESS
The Owls won for the second straight year in their annual 'Play 4 The Cure' event against UMass-Lowell on Oct. 3. In the process, the club helped to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Connecticut chapter was also on hand at the event to accept donations for the cause. 

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END
The Owls saw their four-game winning streak come to a close on Oct. 10 at the hands of No. 7 nationally ranked Bentley.

TWO OWLS EARN LEAGUE WEEKLY HONORS
Junior Dieny Charlot and freshman Laurie Cockerline were tabbed by the Northeast-10 Conference for weekly honors on Oct. 5 Charlot was named the Co-Player of the Week, while Cockerline was named the Freshman of the Week.

THIS DJ IS ON THE OFFENSIVE
After tallying just one point in her first two years with the Owls, junior Dieny Charlot has broken out offensively this season. She has tallied 13 points (five goals, three assists) in 2009.

ZARRELLA PITCHES A PAIR OF SHUTOUTS
Junior goalie Lauren Zarrella has tallied her fourth and fifth career shutouts this year - those coming against Adelphi on Sept. 30 and Franklin Pierce on Oct. 15.

BERRY REMAINS CONSISTENT
Junior Ann Berry leads the team with six assists and ranks fourth on the club in scoring.

MORGAN'S MAGIC
Sophomore Ryan Morgan ranks third on the team in goals (four) and sixth in points (eight) this year.

A FORMIDABLE START
The Owls faced a nationally ranked opponent in eight of their 19 games during the regular season in 2009.

COCKERLINE STRIKES FIRST
Freshman Laurie Cockerline scored her first goal as an Owl in the Sept. 19 game against Merrimack.

FRESHMEN CHIPPING IN
Laura Dembofsky (two goals) and Laurie Cockerline (two assists) each registered multiple-point efforts in the win over Saint Anselm.

ON THE SCOREBOARD
Freshman Laura Dembofsky tallied her first goal as an Owl in the contest against Mansfield.

ZARRELLA TURNING THEM ASIDE
Junior goalie Lauren Zarrella made 22 saves in two outings over the opening weekend, including a 13-save effort in the season opener against Shippensburg.

RETURNING A STRONG CORE
SCSU will have some veteran experience this year with 10 returning players from last year's team.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls were ranked fourth in this year's Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll.

THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Lauren Karn and Kelly Anne McCafferty, along with junior Ann Berry, will captain the Owls this fall.
ON DECK
If the Owls make the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, then they will play on Oct. 29. If not, then the 2009 season is over.
