WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior
KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) tallied seven points, including her first collegiate hat trick, to lead the offensive outburst for the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team in its 7-2 win over Assumption on Wednesday. It was the fourth win in a row for the Owls.
Southern Connecticut is now 5-9 overall and 4-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption dropped to 3-9, 1-5 in league play.
The Owls stormed out of the gate with a vengeance, scoring the first six goals of the game.
McCafferty opened the scoring just 7:18 into the game when she found the back of the net off of an assist from
Brittany Barra (Goshen, Conn.).
The Owls went ahead 2-0 just 3:10 later when
Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.) scored off assists from Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) and
Lauren Karn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).
Ryan Morgan (Stafford, Conn.) scored at 13:47 to pad the lead to 3-0. McCafferty assisted on the goal.
Lyndel Vagnini (Unionville, Conn.) registered her first collegiate goal exactly 22 minutes into the contest.
Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.) assisted on the goal.
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) closed the first half scoring only 95 seconds later off an assist from Berry.
McCafferty make it 6-0 just over eight minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal.
Assumption scored the next two goals, but the Owls' answered late in regulation when McCafferty capped her hat trick off an assist from
Paige Donlin (South Glastonbury, Conn).
The Owls are back in action on Saturday when they face No. 7 nationally ranked Bentley on the road.
