RINDGE, N.H. – Junior captain Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) tallied her first goal of the year, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team lost to Franklin Pierce on Wednesday evening, 5-1. It was the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams.
The Owls are now 0-3, 0-1 in league play. Franklin Pierce improved to 1-1, 1-1.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half. Jordan Baillargeon opened the scoring just 9:20 into the game. Ashley Moirano followed with a tally just under eight minutes later. The Penmen then pulled away with markers from Danielle Dolan and Kimberly Orr just 2:43 apart late in the first half.
Leah Rice made it 5-0 at the 12:22 mark of the second half before Berry scored off a penalty corner at the 70 minute mark.
Goalie Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made seven saves in the contest.
The Owls return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host St. Anselm.
