NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) collected her fourth goal of the season, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to AIC, 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, the Owls descended to 1-8, 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellowjackets improved to 3-6, 2-2 in the league.
In the first half of action, neither team mustered much of an offensive attack. American International's first opportunity came on a penalty shot in the 15th minute of play. Junior
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) denied Lisa Duckles' attempt, to preserve the 0-0 tie score.
However, the Yellowjackets did manage to strike first just before the halftime whistle sounded. Jacki Lapointe reflected a shot from Linsey Fernandes that snuck into the corner for a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Southern wasted very little time finding the equalizer in the second half of play. Dembofsky blasted a shot toward the AIC cage, but was denied by the visiting goalkeeper. However, Dembofsky stayed with the play and laced the rebound into the goal, knotting the game at one.
As regulation inched closer, the game seemed destined for overtime. Nonetheless, Lapointe grasped her second goal of the game with just 1:25 left on the clock. The Owls fought vigorously for the equalizer, but could not find the back of the net, suffering a 2-1 loss.
Zarrella tallied seven saves in the losing effort, while Kim Steiner made three stops for the visiting Yellowjackets.
The Owls are back in action on Sept. 24 when the team takes on Merrimack in North Andover, Mass. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
