Box Score

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Three different members of the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team scored goals, but the Owls were defeated by Merrimack, 5-3 on Thursday afternoon at Warriors Field. With the loss, Southern dropped to 1-9, 1-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Warriors improved to 7-5, 2-1 in the league.

After surrendering a goal just 44 seconds into the first half, Southern's offense responded with two goals of its own. Junior Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.) notched the equalizer in the 20th minute of play. Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) and Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) assisted Charlot, knotting the game up at one apiece.

Sophomore Ryan Morgan (Stafford Springs, Conn.) put the Owls in front just 15 minutes later. Her third goal of the 2009 campaign gave the Owls a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

After April Daugherty tied the game at three in the 58th minute of action, the Owls' offense struck again. Berry tallied the go-ahead goal a mere seven minutes later. The mark was her third of the season and gave SCSU a 3-2 advantage.

Unfortuately, the Warriors answered back with three more goals to close out the scoring summary. Daugherty provided many problems for the Owls, as she finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists.

Junior Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made 13 saves between the pipes for the Owls.

Southern is back in action on Sept. 26 with a match at St. Michael's. Face off is set for 12 p.m.
