Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal just over seven minutes into overtime to give the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team a 4-3 win over Bentley on Saturday. The Owls trailed by a goal late in regulation but forced the extra frame when Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.) scored with just two seconds remaining.

The Owls are now 6-9, 4-3 in Northeast-10 play. Bentley is 5-9, 2-4.

Southern Connecticut struck first just 8:10 into play when Ann Farrier (Belfast, Maine) scored off an assist from Cockerline.

Bentley answered with consecutive goals from Brandy Asplundh and Tori Bergantino to take a 2-1 lead.

The Owls evened the score at 2-2 when Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) found the back of the net with 22:47 left in regulation. Cockerline also set up that score.

However, the Falcons countered with a marker with 11:31 remaining to take a one-goal cushion.

The Owls put on late pressure that paid off when Cockerline connected in the waning seconds of regulation.

That set the stage for Dembofsky, who scored 7:04 into overtime off an assist from Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).

It was the third overtime win of the year for the Owls, who have won two in a row.

Goalie Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) stopped seven shots in the win. Cockerline finished with four points in the contest.

SCSU is back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Adelphi.
