Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior captain Ann Farrier (Belfast, Maine) finished with a goal and an assist, including the game-winning tally, to help the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team ward off a late Adelphi rally in a 3-2 win over the Panthers on Wednesday evening at Jess Dow Field. SCSU scored the first three goals of the contest but several key saves by goalie Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) down the stretch allowed the hosts to win their third consecutive outing.

The Owls are now 7-9 overall, 5-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Adelphi is 8-6, 3-2 in league action.

Southern Connecticut put on an offensive flurry in the early going only to have to withstand a counterattack from Adelphi in the second half.

Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) opened the scoring exactly six minutes in when she scored off an assist from Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.). It was the third straight game that Dembofsky has netted a goal.

The Owls extended their lead to 2-0 just under 11 minutes later on a marker from Aleida Mapes (Springvale, Maine). Coming off a SCSU penalty corner, Mapes connected on a shot from the left side of the circle. Meghan Lahm (Wingdale, N.Y.) and Farrier assisted on the goal.

Farrier made it 3-0 roughly five minutes later when she dribbled along the goal line and tucked a shot past the Adelphi goalie.

The Panthers cut the Owls' lead to 3-1 at halftime thanks to a marker with just over 10 minutes to go in the opening stanza.

Adelphi maintained the pressure in the second half, as it scored just over 10 minutes in to climb within a goal.

However, Zarrella made 11 of her 13 saves in the second half, including a point-blank stop of Julianne Gerbino late in regulation to preserve the win.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Merrimack.
