NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Dieny Charlot (Deep River, Conn.) scored her second goal of the game just 1:19 into overtime to send the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team to its fourth straight win, a 4-3 triumph over Merrimack on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls are now 8-9 overall and 6-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Merrimack is 6-8, 3-4.
The hosts struck just 4:47 into play when
Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn.) connected off the rebound of a shot from
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.).
Merrimack answered with two consecutive goals in a span of 2:50 to forge in front by a goal.
SCSU tied it just under four minutes later when Charlot tallied her first of the day. Originating off a penalty corner, Charlot scored on a shot from the top of the circle as she moved to her right.
Ann Farrier (Belfast, Maine) and
Meghan Lahm (Wingdale, N.Y.) assisted on the goal.
The contest remained deadlocked at 2-2 until past the midway point in the second half. Merrimack scored with 16:07 remaining to take the lead, but the Owls answered just over three minutes later when Farrier drilled home a loose ball in front of the Warriors' cage to even the score at 3-3.
The game-winning goal was set up by
Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.), who maneuvered along the right side of the circle before a pass into the middle was blasted in by Charlot.
Goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with five saves in the game for the Owls.
Southern Connecticut is back in action next Saturday when it hosts Stonehill at 2 p.m.
