NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior goalie
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) stopped 13 shots, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team was defeated by Adelphi, 2-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament first round matchup on Tuesday.
The season ends for the Owls with a final mark of 8-12. Adelphi improves to 13-8 and moves on to the semifinals to play UMass-Lowell.
Adelphi struck first with just over three minutes to go in the opening half when Julianne Gerbino connected on a bid from on the goal line. The game remained at 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Panthers made it 2-0 with a goal from Crystal Gray just past the midway point of the second half.
Southern Connecticut climbed to within a goal just 3:13 after Gray's tally when
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) scored off an assist from
Meghan Lahm (Wingdale, N.Y.).
The Owls had chances to even the score in the final 10 minutes of regulation but were unable to net the equalizer.
