BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team's seven-game road trip began on Wednesday as the Owls faced off against C.W. Post in a doubleheader. Southern took the first game 10-3 behind solid pitching and a strong offensive outing. The second game of the double-dip ended in a 1-1 tie after 10 innings due to a 3:30 p.m. curfew. The Owls are now 4-2-1 on the season and C.W. Post is 2-5-1.
In the first match-up,
Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) started and threw five innings, striking out four and grabbing his first win of the season.
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) led the team offensively, connecting on three hits including a triple and also drove in two runs.
Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) also hit safely three times and
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) and
Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) added two hits each. DeProspo also drove in two runs and Hockenberry recorded a RBI as the Owls totaled 14 hits in the game to claim a 10-3 win.
In game two,
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) allowed just one run in a starting effort, throwing seven and a third innings.
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) came in relief, tossing two and two thirds including two strikeouts. The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh as DeProspo drove in Geffert to take a 1-0 lead, however, C.W. Post would retaliate and tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. The game would later be called after 10 innings due to a 3:30 p.m. curfew and would end in a 1-1 tie.
Southern returns to the field tomorrow to play Felician at 1:00 p.m.
