LOWELL, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept UMass Lowell on Saturday in a doubleheader at LeLacheur Park by the scores of 2-0 and 11-3.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) pitched a gem in the first contest, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just three hits while striking out six. The Owls have now won four straight and are 10-4-1 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. UMass Lowell is 11-7 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10.
Saturday's first game was a defensive showdown that featured eight hits total. The game went scoreless until the top of the eighth as Southern drove in two runs with two outs in the inning.
Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) got things going with a double to left center and would later advance to third on a stolen base.
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) would drive in the go-ahead run on a single to left field and
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) recorded a RBI single to bring in
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.). Yerina had all the insurance he needed to notch his first win of the season.
Game two was a different story as the Owls connected on 14 hits and scored 11 times. They got on the board early with a RBI double from Geffert, who would also score later in the inning on an error by the pitcher as Southern took a 2-0 lead after one.
The Owls had a strong showing in the fourth as well as Malen and Rosadino each drove in two runs to put Southern ahead by six. The bat remained hot as they pulled away, claiming a 11-3 win.
Malen led the way offensively in game two, hitting 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Four Owls also recorded two hits and
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) grabbed the win, going eight and two-third innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out eight. He went eight scoreless innings until UMass Lowell finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth.
Southern returns to The Ballpark at SCSU on Monday to host non-conference opponent Concordia at 3 p.m.
