Owls Edged By AIC, 16-12

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) and sophomore Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.) each finished with four points, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team was defeated by American International College on Wednesday afternoon, 16-12, in a Northeast-10 Conference affair.

The Owls dropped to 0-5, 0-3 on the year. AIC is now 7-1, 2-1 in league action.

The game featured a contrast of two halves. The two clubs combined for 22 goals in a high-octane opening 30 minutes, while the second half yielded just six markers between the sides.

AIC jumped out by scoring three of the first four goals, with the Owls' tally in between coming from Elizabeth Dishian (Shelton, Conn.) However, back-to-back goals from Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass.) and Monfredo evened the game at 3-3.

From there, AIC struck for two goals before Jessica Kraszewski (West Haven, Conn.) and Dishian connected to restore the tie game.

Heiple's first marker came around two AIC goals, but KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) and Heiple struck in a span of 1:32 to give the hosts their first lead of the day at 8-7.

The Yellow Jackets went in front for good with five straight goals to make it 12-8. Monfredo and Shaw each scored prior to the half to make it a 12-10 game at the break.

AIC scored the first three goals of the second half to pad its lead to 15-10. Monfredo and McCafferty added late scores in a 16-12 final.

Goalie# Lisa Corso# (North Bellmore, N.Y.) finished with 15 saves in the contest for the Owls.

Southern Connecticut returns to action on Saturday for a game at Franklin Pierce.
