CALDWELL, N.J. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Caldwell, 23-4 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars to an overall record of 1-4, while the Owls to an overall record of 8-1. Southern has now won five games in a row. 12 different players scored a goal or more in the victory over the Cougars.
Macy Vail and
Anna Meserve scored a team-best of three goals, while Vail totaled six points, with a team-best of three assists.
Maddox Burton also had a team-best of three assists, as she and
Abigail Nolan recorded four points. Seven Owls scored two goals:
Abigail Nolan,
Anna Corcoran,
Madison Olmstead,
Bailey McDermott,
Allie Welder,
Sofia Boucher and
Nicolette Spotlow.
Maddox Burton,
Mia Hartmann and
Hannah Hathway all scored a goal against Caldwell.
In goal,
Caelan Connors got her seventh victory of the season with four saves, in the first half.
Kiley Nolan came into goal in the second half and made two saves.
Anna Meserve won a team-best of seven draws.
Bailey McDermott and
Anna Meserve both had a team-best of two caused turnovers.
Allie Welder and
Anna Meserve picked up a team-best of three ground balls in the victory over the Cougars.
In the first quarter,
Allie Welder scored the first goal of the day for the Owls, within the first minute of play, with an assist from
Abigail Nolan. Minutes later,
Macy Vail got on the board, with an assist from
Maddox Burton, to go up 2-0. Caldwell scored their first goal of the game before
Bailey McDermott responded with a goal. Vail recorded her second goal, with an assist from
Madison Olmstead. Then, Olmstead scored a goal of her own, to put the Owls up 5-1.
In the second quarter,
Hannah Hathway started the scoring off, with her first goal of the game. The Cougars scored their second goal of the day; however, the Owls recorded seven straight goals to end the half, as Meserve, Vail, Nolan, Welder, McDermott and Olmstead all scored goals. Southern extended their lead to 13-2 over Caldwell, heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Owls offense continued to have momentum as
Nicolette Spotlow recorded her first goal of the game, thirty seconds in.
Maddox Burton scored her first goal of the day, to put Southern in a 15-2, lead. However, the Cougars didn't go away as they scored back-to-back goals. Southern answered with three straight goals, as
Mia Hartmann,
Anna Corcoran and
Nicolette Spotlow, grew the lead to 18-4, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter,
Anna Meserve scored her third goal of the game before
Sofia Boucher had her first goal of the game. Minutes later,
Anna Corcoran scored her second goal, with an assist from
Macy Vail.
Abigail Nolan scored her second of the day and two minutes later,
Sofia Boucher had her second goal, with an assist from
Breya Montague, to seal the Owls' 23-4 victory over the Cougars.
The Owls will continue play on the road in Rindge, N.H. on Tuesday, March 31 at 5:00 pm against NE10 opponent, Franklin Pierce.
