WALTHAM, Mass. – A four-run 10th inning followed by a 13-0 dismantling of the Bentley Falcons gave the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team its 20th and 21st wins of the season. They are now 21-7-1 overall with a conference-best mark of 13-3. Bentley is now 13-7 and 8-6 in league play. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader went extra innings as the Owls pulled away in the top of the 10th by recording four runs to claim a 7-3 win. In the second game, Southern scored early and often as they won big by the score of 13-0.
The Owls were held scoreless during the first five innings of Saturday's first contest as they trailed 1-0 entering the sixth.
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) got things started with a lead-off single to right center and later advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt from
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.). With one out remaining, #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) singled to center field, driving in Rosadino and tying the game at 1-1.
Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) led off the top of the eighth with a walk and reached scoring position with a single from Rosadino. Another sacrifice bunt by DeProspo put runners on second and third, which led to a two-RBI single by
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) as Southern went ahead, 3-1.
Bentley added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings. However, the Owls pulled away in the 10th by scoring four runs on just two hits. Rouleau drove in a run on a fielder's choice,
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) hit a two-RBI single and
Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) drove in another run on a sacrifice bunt as Southern took a 7-3 win.
Dorsey, Geffert and Rouleau each recorded two hits and two RBI.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) received a no-decision despite a strong starting effort. He threw eight and a third innings, allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits and struck out five.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) earned the win and
Kyle Penney (Columbia, Conn.) grabbed his second save of the season.
The second game was a different story as the Owls connected on 18 hits, 12 more than the Falcons and scored in six different innings to claim a 13-0 win. They opened the game up with a five-run fourth inning.
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) got things started with a double to center field. The next three batters reached on walks to drive in a run. DeProspo would then single to right field to drive in another run and Geffert popped up to the right fielder for a sacrifice fly. Dorsey would then drive in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning with a double to left field.
Rosadino was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with a triple, RBI, four runs scored and two walks. Geffert knocked in his team-high seventh homerun of the season as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Hockenberry was 3-for-6 from the plate and
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) connected for two more hits.
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) recorded the win and did not allow a run in eight innings pitched. He surrendered just six hits and struck out four.
Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) entered the ninth and did not allow a hit and struck out one batter.
The Owls return to The Ballpark at SCSU on Sunday for a doubleheader against cross-town rival New Haven.
