Offensive Outburst Sends Owls Past AIC, 11-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) and Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) each had three hits to pace a 15-hit attack as the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team claimed an 11-3 win over American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Friday.

The Owls improved to 16-5-1, 9-1 in Northeast-10 play with the win. AIC dropped to 5-13, 2-6 in league action.

SCSU opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) opened the rally with a double. Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) pushed him over to third courtesy of a bunt single. Rosadino eventually came in to score on a fielders' choice by Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.).

AIC tied the game in the top of the third, but the Owls went back in front for good in their next at-bat. Geffert doubled with two outs and was knocked in with a single from #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.). 

Southern Connecticut broke open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled with one out before Cleary plated him with a RBI double.

Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) followed with another run-scoring double to make it 4-1. A RBI single by Rosadino extended the Owls' lead by another run. One out later, Geffert added a RBI single. The final run in the frame came home courtesy of an AIC error.

The Owls added a single run in the fifth to pad their lead to 8-1. Cleary singled, stole second and scored on a single by Malen.

Southern Connecticut tacked on three more runs in the seventh before AIC added two unearned runs in the eighth.

Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) pitched into the seventh and merited just one run on five hits while fanning 10. Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) went the final three innings on the mound to pick up a save.

Southern Connecticut returns to action tomorrow for a home doubleheader against Franklin Pierce. First pitch is set for noon.
