WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior
KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) paced the offense with six points (five goals, one assist), but the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team was tipped by Assumption on Wednesday night, 15-14. The Owls had tied the game at 14-14 late in regulation before a Greyhounds goal proved to be the difference.
The Owls are now 0-12, 0-10 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption is 2-10, 1-9 in league play.
McCafferty opened the scoring less than two minutes into action, but the hosts responded by rattling off seven unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead.
SCSU started its comeback on a marker but McCafferty, but two straight Assumption goals padded the lead to 9-2.
Five consecutive goals followed for the Owls, with scores coming from McCafferty (two),
Lauren Karn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.),
Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass.). After an Assumption goal,
Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) scored to make it a 10-8 game at halftime.
Assumption scored the first goal of the second half, but back-to-back goals from Shaw and Heiple closed the gap to 11-10. The Greyhounds countered with the next goal, but Shaw and Karn connected next to tie the game at 12-12.
The Greyhounds scored twice to build a 14-12 lead. However, the resilient Owls rallied back to even the game on markers from McCafferty and Karn.
An Assumption goal from Sarah Roos with 3:53 left in regulation proved to be the game-winner.
Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) finished with 19 saves in the contest and has 39 stops in her last two outings.
SCSU closes the regular season on Saturday at Saint Anselm.
