ROCKVILLE CENTRE N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Molloy, 12-6, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. the Lions dropped to an overall record of 3-5. The Owls improved to an overall record of 7-1.
Macy Vail scored a team-best of three goals and had four points.
Sofia Boucher and
Abigail Nolan both had two goals while four Owls scored a goal:
Madison Olmstead,
Allie Welder,
Anna Meserve and
Breya Montague.
Hannah Hathway led the Owls with two assists. Meserve and Welder had a team-best of four draws. Meserve and Olmstead had a team-best of two caused turnovers. Also, Meserve led the Owls with four ground ball pick ups. In goal,
Caelan Connors had seven saves in her sixth victory of the season.
In the first quarter, the Lions got on the board first, but
Macy Vail threw a shot into the goal from the free position, for the Owls' first goal of the game, to tie the game, 1-1.
Allie Welder then recorded her first goal of the day, with an assist from
Maddox Burton. However, Molloy didn't go away as they tied the game at 2-2, going into the second.
In the second quarter, Southern Connecticut created scoring opportunities and ran with their momentum as
Taryn Ugrin had her first goal of the day before
Sofia Boucher scored her first goal as the Owls went up 4-2. Yet again, the Lions continued to score as they tied the game at 4-4, with five minutes left in the half. Southern responded with back-to-back goals from
Abigail Nolan and
Breya Montague as the Owls extended their lead back to two goals and a 6-4 lead, heading into halftime.
In the third quarter,
Macy Vail scored within the first minute of play for the Owls. Molloy added another goal to their total; but shortly after, Vail scored her third goal of the game.
Anna Meserve got on the score sheet for Southern, as she scored the ninth goal for the Owls, with eight minutes left. Southern would hold Molloy, scoreless for the remainder of the quarter as they went into the fourth, with a 9-5 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions scored their sixth goal of the day and got within three goals of the Owls but Southern responded with a goal from
Abigail Nolan, to extend the lead, back to four. Time ticked down, as
Madison Olmstead had her first goal of the game, with three minutes left to play. Then,
Sofia Boucher sealed the victory with the Owls' final goal of the game as Southern defeated Molloy, 12-6.
The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 at 4:00 pm in Caldwell, New Jersey in a non-conference matchup against Caldwell.
