JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team split a pair of games with the Northeast-10 Conference's newest member, Adelphi, on Saturday afternoon in Jamaica, N.Y. The Owls defeated the Panthers in extra innings by the final score of 12-6 in game one by scoring 10 unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth frames. Adelphi bounced back with a 14-6 victory through five innings in game two. With the results, SCSU moved to 16-8, 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
In game one of the doubleheader, Southern needed a late comeback in the final frame of regulation to force extra innings. Senior
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasantville, N.Y.) stepped into the batters box with runners on second and third with two outs and came through with a two-run single to tie the game up at six. Iacomini completed the rally by pitching a one-two-three bottom half, sending the two teams into bonus softball.
In the top of the eighth, the Owls responded with an additional six runs on five hits for a 12-6 advantage.
Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.),
Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) and
Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) each recorded hits and RBIs in the innings, while
Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) capped off the scoring column with a two-run homerun to centerfield.
Iacomini retired the side in the final frame to solidify the come-from-behind victory. Iacomini was credited with the win and moved to 6-0 on the season.
The Owls return to action on April 7 when the squad welcomes Saint Rose to Pelz Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
