THE START OF SOMETHING NEW
A four-game homestand to kick off the 2010 season begins on Saturday for the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team as the Owls host on No. 2 nationally ranked Shippensburg as part of the SCSU Tournament. Mansfield and St. Michael's will also head to New Haven for this weekend's event. SCSU closes the weekend with a game against Mansfield on Sunday. Ten student-athletes return for the 2010 season for the Owls, including four seniors.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls have brought nine newcomers into the fold this year - Robin Donaldson, Meghan Lahm, Alexandria Merked, Erica Fisher, Sarah Cebry, Petru Bester, Kristin Grecula, Lauren Cox and Amanda DeChent.

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Seniors Ann Farrier and Jennifer Peterson will captain the squad this fall.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls were selected seventh in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

BACK-TO-BACK
The Owls qualified for the Northeast-10 Tournament for the second year in a row in 2009. It marked the fifth NE-10 Tournament appearance for the Owls under head coach Kelley Frassinelli. Previously, SCSU made the tournament in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008.

ZARRELLA MOVED ATOP THE WIN LIST
Goalie Lauren Zarrella became the all-time winningest goalie in program history with the win over Franklin Pierce on Oct. 15. Zarrella has registered 27 career wins as an Owl.

'PLAY 4 THE CURE' ONCE AGAIN A SUCCESS
The Owls won for the second straight year in their annual 'Play 4 The Cure' event against UMass-Lowell on Oct. 3. In the process, the club helped to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Connecticut chapter was also on hand at the event to accept donations for the cause.

THIS DJ IS ON THE OFFENSIVE
After tallying just one point in her first two years with the Owls, junior Dieny Charlot broke out offensively during the season. She tallied 13 points (five goals, three assists) in 2009. For her efforts, she was named to both the All-Northeast-10 and All-ECAC squads.

ZARRELLA PITCHES A PAIR OF SHUTOUTS
Junior goalie Lauren Zarrella tallied her fourth and fifth career shutouts in 2009 - those coming against Adelphi on Sept. 30 and Franklin Pierce on Oct. 15.

NO BACKING DOWN
The Owls faced a nationally ranked opponent in nine of their 20 games in 2009.

TWO SELECTED TO SENIOR ALL-STAR GAME
Seniors Lauren Karn and Kelly Anne McCafferty were selected to participate in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North-South Senior All-Star Game.

OWLS EARN RECOGNITION FROM CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION
The Connecticut Department of Higher Education recognized the Owls for their extensive community outreach efforts in an event held in Hartford in April, 2010.

KARN NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Senior Lauren Karn was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey All-Academic Team following the conclusion of the season. The psychology major had posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.83 at the time of the selection. It was the second such honor of her career.

ON DECK
The Owls host UMass-Lowell on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
