NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Freshman
Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion, connecting on a penalty stroke in overtime to give the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Merrimack on Saturday. DeChent scored both of the Owls' goals in the victory.
The Owls improved to 2-5 on the year with the win. Merrimack is now 3-5.
After a scoreless first half, SCSU opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the second half with a goal from DeChent that came off an assist from
Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.).
The Owls carried their lead late into the second half, but Merrimack evened the score with just over eight minutes to go to force overtime.
However, SCSU was able to pull out the win with DeChent's tally in the extra frame.
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with 12 saves in the contest.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday for a game against Stonehill.
