WELCOME BACK

The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team opens the 2011 season with a pair of games in Pennsylvania this weekend. The Owls face Mansfield on Saturday at 11 a.m. before a contest with No. 2 nationally ranked Shippensburg on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Shippensburg.

THE CAPTAINS
Senior Ryan Morgan and junior Randi Schock will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
The Owls were selected seventh in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

A VETERAN PRESENCE RETURNING
Southern Connecticut has 10 student-athletes returning from last year's squad.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome four newcomers to this year's squad - Stephanie Karn, Nicole Scionti, Allison Vilardi and Katy Williams.

THE TRIFECTA
The Owls qualified for the Northeast-10 Tournament for the third year in a row in 2010. It marked the sixth NE-10 Tournament appearance for the Owls under head coach Kelley Frassinelli. Previously, SCSU made the tournament in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE
The win over Mansfield last year marked the first time since the 1999 season that the Owls defeated a member of the PSAC. That year, the Owls defeated both Kutztown and Lock Haven.

TEN OWLS HONORED BY NFHCA
Ten members of the Owls' field hockey squad - Petru Bester, Laurie Cockerline, Paige Donlin, Amanda DeChent, Ann Farrier, Kristin Grecula, Megan Lahm, Ryan Morgan, Jennifer Peterson and Lauren Zarrella - were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year.

OWLS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut posted the fourth-highest team grade point average among all Division II field hockey programs in 2010 and earned national honors from the NFHCA.

TRIO HONORED BY NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE

Seniors Ann Farrier and Dieny Charlot both collected All- Northeast-10 Conference honors, while freshman Sarah Cebry was named to the league's All-Rookie Team in 2010.

KEEPING IT INTERESTING
Five of the Owls' eight wins in 2010 came by a goal, including the last three triumphs.

KEEPING THE STREAK GOING

The Owls won their third straight 'Play 4 The Cure' contest on Oct. 9, 2010 with a convincing 6-1 win over St. Michael's. The team wore pink jerseys and representatives from the Susan G. Komen Foundation were on site to assist the Owls in their efforts to raise breast cancer awareness. SCSU defeated St. Anselm in its first 'Play 4 The Cure' game in 2008 and downed a nationally ranked UMass-Lowell squad in 2009.

ONE OR THE OTHER

The Owls scored 33 goals in their eight wins, but just 10 goals in their 12 losses.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on Sept. 6 for the home opener against Assumption. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
